by 완두 When we first came to the council two years ago, one of the first issues we tackled was the DPR case, missile, nuclear issues.

Our term on the council started and is ending with the North Korean issue.
북한 문제로 이사회가 시작되었고, 이제 그 문제로 마무리를 하고 있습니다.
(*term: 기간, 용어)This must be just coincidence, but I’m saying this with a heavy heart.
북한 문제로 시작과 끝을 맺는다는 것이 그저 우연일 수도 있겠지만, 저는 무거운 마음을 안고 이 말을 꼭 전하려고 합니다.
To the South Koreans, people in North Korea are not just anybodies.
대한미국 사람들에게, 북한 주민은 절대로 그냥 스쳐지나가는 '아무나'가 아닙니다. Millions of South Koreans still have our family members and relatives living in the North.
수백만명의 대한미국 국민의 가족과 친척들이 아직도 북한에 살고 있습니다. Even though we never hear from them,
우리가 북한 사람들과 소식을 주고 받지는 못할지라도even though by now the pain of the separation has become the cold factor of life
지금까지도 분단의 고통이 엄연한 차가운 현실이 되어버렸다고 해도just a few hundred kilometers away from where we live.
우리의 가족과 친척이 우리가 살고 있는 곳에서 겨우 수백킬로미터 떨어진 곳에 살고 있습니다.
We cannot read when this is described in the COI (북한 인권 조사위원회) report, without it, breaking our heart.
북한 인권 조사위원회의 보고서 내용에 담겨진 내용을 읽노라면, 말할 것도 없이 가슴이 찢어집니다.

We cannot listen to the stories of North Korean defectors without sharing in their tears,
탈북자들의 이야기는 눈물 없이는 들을 수 없고without feeling as if we are there with them, experiencing their tragedies.
그들의 아픔을 같이 느끼면서 그들 곁에 함께 있다는 마음으로 듣게됩니다.
(*cannot ~~ without...: ....하지 않고, ~~ 할 수 없다, ~하려면... 하게 된다)
We only hope that one day in the future,
우리의 유일한 소원은 이겁니다. 먼 훗날, 언젠가,when we look back on what we did today,
우리가 오늘 한 이 일을 되돌아 봤을 때,
we will be able to say that we did the right thing
정말 옳은 일을 했구나 말할 수 있게 되길 바랄뿐입니다.
for the people of North Korea, for the lives of every man and woman, boy and girl who has the same human rights as the rest of us.
북한주민들, 남녀노소 한 사람 한사람이 우리와 똑같이 인간답게 살 권리가 있고, 그들을 위해서, 오늘 우리가 옳은 일을 했다고 말할 수 있게 되길 바랍니다.
